The Galapagos Islands are one of the most volcanically active island systems in the world. In January 1995 the westernmost island in the archipelago began spewing molten lava into the sea. These images were taken at sunrise and sunset, showing brilliant red lava hitting the sea, creating explosions of steam. Some of the shots include frigate birds and gulls feeding on the fishes killed by the boiling waters.
